This family had a unique vision—the homeowners’ parents wanted to be “sunbirds”, splitting their time between New England and a warmer climate, but they needed a comfortable place to stay when visiting their grandchildren. At the same time, the homeowners dreamed of a luxurious master suite with a spacious closet and ensuite bath.

We designed and built a first-floor in-law ADU (Accessory Dwelling Unit) while adding a new master suite above it. To maximize space, we also remodeled a section of the existing walkout basement, adding valuable square footage to the ADU.

Since the existing slab was uneven, we applied a self-leveling solution to create a smooth, stable base for the new LifeProof flooring and kitchen cabinets. Both the ADU and master bath feature a UTILE shower and tub kit, which provides the look of custom tile without the high cost. Throughout the common areas, we installed luxury vinyl plank flooring, while the ADU bedrooms were finished with plush carpeting for warmth and comfort.

The end result? A beautiful, functional space that meets the needs of three generations, allowing the family to stay connected while maintaining their own privacy and independence.
